With DIY double glazing replacement, you can work at your own pace and schedule the project around your life – just the way it should be!

Measuring For Your Own Double Glazing

Measuring for double glazing, particularly for replacement windows, is quite straightforward. A level of accuracy is required, but it’s certainly a task that a competent DIY’er will have no problem doing themselves. It’s best to measure from the outside, from brickwork opening to brickwork opening, not the existing frame, and in at least three different places for both height and width. Deduct approximately 10mm (or 1cm), from the smallest measurements to allow for fitting. And ideally, provide measurements in metric units - millimetres or centimetres.

It’s a good idea to check and double-check, just to ensure all measurements are accurate. And if it’s applicable, measure and include any existing cills or frame extenders/add-ons in your measurements.

If your property is rendered, you may need to remove some render to reveal the brickwork edge for accurate measurements. And, if your window has a cill, measure from underneath it unless it's not removable.

The Key To A Successful DIY Installation

Preparation is the key to a successful double glazing installation. It pays dividends to prepare each room individually, focus on clearing the area around the frames, protecting furniture and floors, and ensuring that your access is unhindered. This includes removing any trims and coverings, moving furniture away from the windows and covering floors and furniture with dust sheets.

You’re going to require access to the doors and windows, both inside and outside, so it may be a good idea to move outdoor plants out of harm’s way. And most importantly, make sure the kettle is within reach for when you take a respite for a well-earned cup of tea!

Doors And Windows Building Regulations

The good news is there is no legal restriction preventing you from completing your own double glazing installation.

If you choose to install your own doors and windows, you'll need to arrange for an inspection by your local building control authority to ensure they meet regulations.

All double glazing installations must comply with building regulations, regardless of who does the work (homeowner, trade or registered installers). And there may be a fee for the building control inspection, which can vary by location. To get in touch with your local council about building regulations, you should contact their Building Control department.
